Paint with distress inks

Nu ska jag visa hur jag målar med distresser. Distressfärgerna kan man köpa både i stämpeldynor och i sk. påfyllnadsflaskor. Jag har valt att köpa alla 36 färgerna i flaskor, så jag enkelt kan droppa några droppar i små fack så det är enkelt att använda dem när jag målar. Sen har jag även köpt några dynor som jag använder till andra saker.

Now I going to show you how I paint with distress inks. The distress inks you can buy both as refill bottles and stamp pads. I’ve chosen to buy all 36 coloures as bottles, then it’s easy for me to just drip some ink in small cases. It makes it easier to use them when I paint. I’ve also got some stamp pads that I use for other purpuses.

Jag föredrar att måla med distresserna eftersom de är vattenlösliga, de är otroligt dryga, det går åt såååå lite färg varje gång. Bara en droppe färg räcker jättelänge. Man kan även blanda färgerna med varandra så det blir andra nyanser. Det är lätt att skugga med dem, och de går att få i olika nyanser beroende på hur mycket vatten man använder. Jag har haft mina flaskor i ett par år, och jag målar ofta. Men de är inte slut än på länge.

I prefer to paint my motives with distress inks because they are waterbased, and really economical, you use so little every time. One one drip and it last a real long time. You can also make your own colors and diffrent shades. They are easy to make shadows with. I’ve had my bottles in a couple of years and I paint often, and I still have the same bottles.

Utanpå asken har jag dekorerat lite, och skrivit vad alla färger heter.

Outside the box I’ve decorated a little bit, and written down the names of the colours.

Här kan ni se hur jag har droppat färgerna i en ask. Jag har nummer på dem, samma nr som på utsidan av locket och även samma nummer som jag skrivit med vattenfast penna på flaskorna. Detta för att det ska vara enkelt att fylla på facken när det börjar sina.

Here you can se how i drip colours in a box with small cases. I’ve got numbers on them, the same number on the outside of the lid and also on the bottles. I’ve wrotten it with a waterproof pen. This procedure I do to make it easier when I have to refill the cases.

Först tar jag lite vatten på penseln och lägger på ett litet fat. Sen tar jag färg med pensel-spetsen, ytterst lite, och blandar med vattnet så jag får den nyansen jag vill ha. Jag brukar ha ett kaffefilter under motivet när jag målar, så jag kan provmåla eller dra av lite av färgen/vattnet, så det inte blir så blött.

The first thing I do is to dip the brush in water and put it on a little dish. Then I take the color I want to use on the point of the brush, very little, and mix the color with the water to get the shade that I want. I will use a coffee filter under the motive as I paint. It’s good when you want to lose some of the color, or try out the colors shade.

Jag målar först ansiktet på häxan. Jag brukar blanda färgerna “Tattered Rose” och “Antique Linen” som ansiktsfärg. Och mycket vatten, så det blir ljust, men inte för blöt pensel, då blir pappret inte så fint. Dra av lite på kaffefiltret.

The first thing I did was to paint the witch face. I mix the colors “Tattered Rose” and “Antique Linen” to make the face color. And I use lots of water, until it seems as light as i want it. But be careful not to use a brush with to much water in it, the paper may get a little bit destroyed. I use the coffee filter to take some water out of the brush.

Sen tar jag en annan färg och blandar med vatten på fatet. Jag brukar ta rätt så ljus nyans om jag vill skugga efter.

Then I take another color and mix it with water on the dish. I always make the first color light so that I can set a shadow after.

Måla hela fältet som du vill ha i färgen.

Paint the whole field that you want to be in that color.

Efter det tar jag mer färg med mindre vatten i, och målar bara i kanterna. Jag drar med penseln fram och tillbaka från häxans svarta linje och in mot mitten på fältet. Man får göra en liten bit i taget. Är man snabb kan man ta hela nederkanten på kjolen på en gång, men nästa moment måste ske snabbt.

After that I take less water and a bit more color and just paint the edges. I draw the brush back and forward from the stamped line and in to the middle of the field. You have to draw a little bit at a time. If you draw like, the whole skirt at the same time, you have to be super fast if you don’t want a sharp line.

Jag “suddar” med lite ljusare färg eller bara lite vatten så det inte blir en skarp kant på skuggningen. Man får vara ganska snabb annars torkar färgen in i pappret och det är svårt att få bort om det blir en skarp kant. Om du ändå får en skarp kant, så försök att ta lite mer färg och skugga längre in, tills kanten försvinner. Prova dig fram!

I rub out with a light color or just some water not to make the egde on the shadow so sharp. You have to be pretty fast or the paint will dry and it will get more difficult to get the sharp edge away. If you get a sharp edge anyway, try to take a little more color and make the shadow a little bit closer to the middle until the sharp edge disapears.
Trial and error!

Skugga hela motivet så mycket du känner för. Jag har här skuggat även på armen och bak på klänningen. Jag brukar skugga mörkare lite här och där, det finns nog inte någon logik i var eller hur. En del skuggar säkert där skuggan skulle falla om man hade ett ljus över, men sånt tänker inte jag på. Lite i kanterna och i hörn tycker jag blir bra.

Lay a shadow on the motive as much that you want. I have layed a shadow on her arm and also on the back of the dress. I try to make the shadow more significent here and there, but I don’t have any logic in where or how. Some may lay shadows depending on where the light comes from, but I don’t. A little around the edges and in the corners I think is enough.

Här har jag dels målat kjolens skugga mörkare, och målat med en tredje färg, på förklädet. Måla hela fältet med ganska ljus färg = mycket vatten, men ej för blöt pensel.

Here you can see that I’ve painted shadow of the skirt darker and I also used a third color on the apron. Color the whole field with a light color=lots of water, but don’t use a brush that is to wet.

Jag har skuggat förklädet med en mörkare nyans, blandad med en annan färg. Den färgen jag hade först är ganska ljus i sig, så det krävs nästan nån mörkare färg. Beroende på färg, så kan man oftast blanda i svart i grundfärgen på fatet, lek lite med färgerna, nyanserna, penseln och vattnet och provmåla på kaffefiltret tills du blir nöjd. Och som jag skrev innan, så kan man blanda alla färgerna med varann. Sen fortsätter jag med att måla hela motivet, i det här fallet hucklet, skorna och tekannan. Gör på samma sätt med skuggningen på alla färgdelar.

I have layed a shadow on the apron in a darker color, I’ve mixed it with an other color. The color I had as the base is pretty light itself, so it takes a darker color to get a nice looking shadow. Depending on which color you can almost every time use a little black to mix the color into a darker one. Try to mix the colors and see what you like best. You can try out the color by painting on your coffee filter. And as I said before, all the colors can be mixed. After this I continue to paint the rest of the motive; the shoes, tea-pot and head-scarf. Lay the shadow as you did in the previous step.

Jag använder en vit penna och göra lite streck här och där, för att få lite mer liv i motivet. Man får prova sig fram om man känner att man vill använda sig av vit penna, tills man hittar ett sätt man trivs med.

I almost always use a white pen to make some lines here and there, to make the motive more alive. You have to try it yourself to see if you like to use a white pen or not.

Jag brukar till 99% klippa ut alla motiv eftersom jag gärna gör scener med flera motiv. Man kan självklart maska stämplarna oxå, men jag föredrar att klippa ut och sätta på olika nivåer med 3D-kuddar. Hur man maskar kommer du oxå att kunna läsa om här inne.

I cut out about 99% of my motives because I like to make scenes with a lot of different motives at the same card. You can of course also mask your motives, but I prefer to cut them out and use 3D-Foam squares to get some different levels. You can read about “How to mask you motives” here.

Om man inte klipper ut motivet, utan har det på en pappersbit som häxan här ovan, så är det snyggt att använda en ljusljus grå penna, jag har använt Promarkers warm grey på bilden. Det får motivet att lixom “stå upp” lite.

If you don’t cut out your motive, it looks pretty great to use a really light grey pen outside around the edges. It makes the motive pop.
